Yvonne Stone
Horton
d. Apr 2, 2025
Camden
Yvonne Stone Horton of Camden, AR died Wednesday, April 2, 2025. She was born in Los Angeles, California to Harold Irwin Stone and Leona Schrank Stone. She was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church in Camden and was a retired beloved public school teacher having taught Reading and English in the Camden School District for over 30 years. Yvonne was particularly instrumental in establishing the Rock 'N Read program in Ouachita County in 1994-1995, which provides books to families of children ages 0-5 at birth and on their birthday. It was based in Camden for 20 years and was supported by many community organizations and businesses. Today, the program lives on as an Endowment at the Arkansas Community Foundation helping children in Ouachita and Calhoun Counties. Rock 'N Read was dear to her heart as it enables families regardless of income to have books in their home to instill a love of reading in their children. In addition, Yvonne was a founder of People Are Concerned (PAC) in the 1980's, an organization established to prevent drug abuse in teens. Her interests also included horticulture as she truly had a green thumb growing every kind of plant imaginable, even tending a 100 year old Longhorn fern.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Douglas Robertson. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Horton, of Camden, AR, a son, Steve Robertson (Amy) of Fayetteville, AR, a sister, Gail Hartman of California, a daughter-in-law, Kari Whisenhunt of Conway, a granddaughter, Johanna Robertson of Fordham University in New York City and 5 nieces, Kay, Karen, Pat, Pam and Joanie.
Graveside services will be Friday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Community Foundation (Rock 'N Read Endowment), 5 Allied Drive, Suite 51110, Little Rock, AR 72202 or to Saint John's Episcopal Church, 117 Harrison Avenue NW, Camden, AR.
