Susan "Sue" Smith, born on April 12, 1958, in Camden, Arkansas, departed this world on June 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, steadfast faith, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. As we gather to remember and celebrate her life, our hearts are touched by the deep imprint she made on her family, friends, and community.

Sue grew up in a close-knit family, finding joy and pride in being an “army brat” alongside her beloved brothers. The memory of her father, 1 Sgt. Charles W. Smith, and her loving mother, Erleen Givens Smith, was always near to Sue’s heart. She also remembered with affection her grandparents, Ray and Lucy Givens, Gus and Effie Smith, and uncles Red Smith and Reggie & Ann Smith, who preceded her in passing.

Those closest to Sue knew her as a woman grounded in love and humility. She held a special protective affection for her siblings, especially her baby brother, always putting her family before herself. Sue is deeply missed by her surviving brothers: Jeb Smith, Mark (Anna) Smith, and Matthew (Sandra) Smith; niece and nephews: Scarlett Amber Sarbaugh, Jake (Amanda) Evans, Bryan (Margaret) Smith, Charlie (Morgan) Smith; and aunts, Carolyn & Thurlow Counts and Virginia Smith.

Sue’s warmth radiated far beyond her family. For twenty-two years, she served as a cashier at Walmart, where her open heart made every checkout a cheerful encounter, as a result, customers always got in her checkout lane. She genuinely loved people, and it was often said that she never met a stranger. Her gentle nature, coupled with a humble spirit, endeared her to coworkers and customers alike. Many will remember her for her life philosophy: “I have my good days, and my bad days. But I keep going.” This quiet resilience was her gift, inspiring all around her.

An ardent member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, Sue was a devoted Southern Baptist. Her faith anchored her throughout life’s storms; she loved the Lord fiercely and read her Bible every day. Even as her health declined and she could no longer attend services, the comfort of scripture and prayer never left her side.

Sue’s love of life blossomed most beautifully in her gardens. Tending her flowerbeds—especially her vibrant sunflowers—brought her peace and fulfillment, as she watched the golden blooms follow the sun’s arc across the sky. She found joy in simple pleasures, from nurturing her beloved dog Benny to preparing her famous peanut butter and jelly sandwiches—considered the best by her nephew.

Though gentle and reserved, Sue’s devotion and protective instinct for her family were fierce. Her presence at family gatherings, her listening ear, and her ready smile will be deeply missed. She will be remembered for her loving, humble nature and her steady commitment to others.

A graveside service honoring Sue’s life will be held at Sardis Cemetery, 453 Dallas County Road 223, Sparkman, Arkansas, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
