A beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Robert Lee Mays passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on August 23, 2024, at the age of 81 in Camden, Arkansas. He was born in Memphis, TN on May 28, 1943. He was the son of the late Cobie James Mays and Corine Amie Culp Mays and brother-in-law to the late James Stafford.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Newton Mays, children son Rod Mays (Stacy), and daughter Traci Holder. He is also survived by his sisters Mary E. Stafford and Jimmie Lou Pickett (Jerry, "Tiny"). "Pop" is survived by five adoring grandchildren: Mason Holder (Sarah Beth), MaKenna Holder, Kelly Jones (Zach), Reed Mays, Riley Mays, and one great-grandchild on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was a proud 1961 graduate of Fairview High School where he was involved in all things sports. He was a great all-around athlete receiving numerous awards including being the first recipient of the Walter Tate Award. The love of sports carried on through the years. From playing basketball and football for his Fairview Cardinals to baseball with the American Legion. Then on to church league softball and coaching his children. During that time, you could also find him running up and down officiating football and basketball games. His love for football was evident in his 34 years of officiating football games. During those years he had the privilege of officiating two playoff games, one in 1994 and another in 1996. In 1995, he had the honor of officiating a final championship game.

Robert's favorite places were outdoors. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also an avid gardener and he enjoyed blessing his friends and family with fruits and vegetables. Another favorite pastime was going around town and picking up pecans with his friends to give away.

Robert's love for the Lord was exemplified in his values and the way he treated others. He was a long-time member of Cullendale First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. Loving others was his gift and his legacy.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, August 30 at Proctor Funeral Home. The funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 31 at Cullendale First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cullendale First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
