Obituary

Joyce Ann (Laney) Maxwell, lovingly known as "Meme", went to be with her loving Savior on April 18, 2026, at the age of 83.

Joyce was born in Camden, Arkansas on April 1, 1943, to David Curtis Laney and Bethel Davis Laney. She graduated from Fairview High School in 1961. Joyce and Dick married on April 13, 1963. After Dick's time in the Navy, they moved back to Camden where Joyce went to work at M&S Clinic, then stayed home to raise her children through their High School years. She then went to work at SAU Tech in Camden where she retired as the Purchasing Director. Her favorite role was wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of Cullendale First Baptist Church in Camden for 77 years where she faithfully served in many areas of the church. Joyce and Dick moved to Fort Smith, AR in 2020 to be near family where they joined Rye Hill Baptist Church and were members of the Glorybound Sunday School Class.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father and mother, her husband of 60 years and best friend, James Richard (Dick) Maxwell, as well as her sister, Sarah Beth Laney.

She is survived by her daughters Marcy Lynn Maxwell and Molly Rebecca Maxwell, and her son Dr. James Richard Maxwell, Jr. and his wife Janna (Southerland) Maxwell. Meme is also survived by her dearly loved grandchildren: Claire Grace Cabaness, Anna Elizabeth Cabaness, Dr. Kendall Layne (Maxwell) Martin and her husband, William Thomas Martin, and Gresham James Maxwell. She is also survived by her brother, David Laney and his wife, Linda (Bailey), and her sister Linda (Laney) Lee and her husband, Dr. Jim Lee, as well as many loved nieces and nephews.

Joyce lived a life of grace and was a beautiful picture of Jesus to everyone around her. Meme loved her family and was always preparing meals to bring everyone together. She loved consistently and unconditionally. She was steady and a constant presence to her loved ones, always serving as a reminder of our Savior. Everything she did was with grace and poise. Meme will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her enduring love for her family, and the way she lit up the room for those around her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
