David ‘Buck’ Slocum, 84, went home to be with his Lord & Savior on Monday, Sep 21, 2026 in Camden, AR.

David was born Aug 30, 1942 in Hickory Ridge, AR to Gerald “Doc” & Rene Slocum. He was a member of the Maul Road Church of Christ. He lived in Arkansas his entire life & was a lifelong Hog fan. He graduated from Hickory Ridge High School and began his adult life as a barber. He later went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co (later AT&T). He retired from AT&T in 1990 after 23 years of dedicated service. He decided he was not ready for retirement, so he earned his CDL and spent many years driving an 18-wheeler across the country. He traveled from coast-to-coast and even went to Canada. He enjoyed taking his wife, Fern, and grandkids with him when he could. He never met a stranger and had many stories to tell about his life and would tell them to anyone that would listen, even though most of us had heard them many times before.

David loved to hunt, fish, and just being outdoors, we always joked that nature brought out the best in him. Just last week he had gone fishing with his dear friend Gary Harris & was looking forward to another morning of fishing with him this Wednesday. Last week all he caught was a turtle but for him it was a great time spent with a great friend. He enjoyed helping out at church and working pantry on Thursdays.

David was known by many names among those that loved him, he was David Gerald to some, Dad, Pops, Buck, and Papaw to others – each reflecting the deep affection of those he loved. With all his heart he loved his wife, Fern, his kids, Nanette, Bubba, David & Gena, all his Grands & Great Grands, his church family but most of all he loved God.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald “Doc” Slocum; mother, Rene Slocum; mother-in-law Gladys Jones; son, Sherman Howland; great-grandson, Seth Stewart; sister-in-law, Imogene Duncan; brother-in-law, Harris Randle; brother-in-law, Jimmy Duncan and great granddaughter, Madison Stewart.

David was survived by his daughter, Nanette Porter and husband, Mike of Camden, AR; son, Laurence (Bubba) Howland and wife, Lisa of Camden, AR; son, David Slocum, Jr and wife Fran, of Royal, AR; daughter, Gena Medford and husband Rob of Euless, TX; sister, Ginger Randle of Sherwood, AR; brother, Joe Slocum and wife, Christy of Bella Vista, AR; grandchildren; Todd Stewart (Cindy); Tony Stewart, Chris Howland, Trista Howland, Trey Howland, Patrick Phillips and wife Stephanie, Jon David Slocum (Rachel), Maggie Gibson (Brian), Gracie Perry (Bud), Dustin Medford (Kaylie), Katy Medford; sixteen great-grandchildren & on one the way; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at Maul Road Church of Christ at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 25, 2026 with visitation beginning at 1:00 P.M. Burial at Lakeside Cemetery will follow.
