Bernice Chambliss Robertson, 95, of Camden, went to be with the Lord on May 28, 2022. Born on October 27, 1926, to Alvah and Ethel Chambliss, Bernice leaves behind a wonderful legacy as a loving wife, mother, sister, Mawmaw, and friend.

Bernice was married to the love of her life, Wesley "Cotton" Robertson for 76 years, until he passed away just two weeks ago. Not surprisingly and symbolic of their oneness, she soon followed him from this life. Everyone else called him "Cotton," but not Bernice-she only referred to him as "Wesley." They first met when he was a city bus driver, and she rode the bus to work each day. The two would eventually marry and start a family-raising their daughter Sandra at their house on Tate Street.

Bernice did many remarkable things in her life, but none gave her more satisfaction than being a wife and mother. Boy could she cook. Chicken and dumplings, creamed corn, coconut cake... there are too many favorites to list. Her granddaughters' classmates at OBU could not get enough of Bernice's homemade salsa. And her great-grandkids rarely ever visited the house on Tate Street without being served a Coke float. Bernice and Wesley's garden was legendary in Camden. He grew the vegetables, and she did all the canning and freezing. Like most things-it was a family affair, and many days were spent teaching her granddaughters to shell peas and snap green beans.

In addition to her domestic roles, Bernice worked for many years at the iconic Stinson's Jewelers in Camden. She loved helping brides select their silver and china patterns and assisting them in choosing engagement rings. Bernice was a long-time, faithful member of Cullendale First Baptist Church.

Bernice was one of 10 children-she had seven sisters and two brothers. Bernice loved to travel, and she and her sisters went on many adventures over the years. There were trips to California, Asheville, Branson, and Gatlinburg. They once drove a borrowed van to Las Vegas, where they ran out of gas in the desert and had to pay $50 for a single gallon of gas to get back on the road. And Bernice's granddaughters always loved the story of their Mawmaw riding a camel on her trip to the Holy Land. For a girl who grew up in the small-town of Bearden, Bernice lived a full and fulfilling life.

Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, Wesley; father and mother, Alvah and Ethel Chambliss; sisters Allene, Bertha, Clemmie, Annie Sue, Louise, and Jessie Ruth; and brother Edwin. She is survived by brother Charles and sister Carolyn; daughter Sandra Jones (Richard) of Camden; granddaughters Julie Bird (Billy) and Lisa Lowe; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Wesley and Everett Bird and Hannah and Andrew Lowe; and a host of other extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 5, at 2:00 at Cullendale First Baptist Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in Camden. Visitation will follow at the gravesite.
